Temporary lane closure at level crossings in Retreat and Steenberg
26 May 2026
The City of Cape Town and Metrorail would like to advise residents and road users of a temporary lane closure at the Military Road level crossing in Steenberg and White Road level crossing in Retreat this week.
The following temporary lane closures, with traffic accommodation in place, will permit Prasa and City officials to complete a joint condition assessment and maintenance as required by the Railway Safety Regulator:
Military Road level crossing in Steenberg on Wednesday, 27 May 2026 between 09:00 and 14:00. The section of Military Road between Steenberg Road and Henley Road in Steenberg will be affected
White Road level crossing in Retreat on Thursday, 28 May 2026 between 09:00 and 14:00. A section of White Road in Retreat will be affected
‘The City understands that lane closures can cause inconvenience to motorists and residents, but these maintenance activities are necessary to improve safety at the Military and White Road level crossings. We appeal to all road users to be patient, adhere to temporary traffic management measures and exercise caution in the area while this important work is under way,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The City of Cape Town and Metrorail have an existing Maintenance Agreement in place for the maintenance of railway level crossings and the approach roads where the City is the road authority.
The City apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks residents and commuters for their understanding and cooperation.
